Nova News

Nova Ninjas Family Class
Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister…the Whole Family! Here is your opportunity to bond and spend time with your kids! Please come dressed in workout clothes as you get to have fun on the mats with your children. This will be a class with basic self-defense techniques that anyone can do! It will be a fun time and your children will love you showing them what leadership looks like by you stepping out on to the mat!

This is going down this Wed 8/30!

Stripe Week

We will now be promoting and doing stripes the last week of each month. It is important to be here the last week of each month (and the other weeks too!) to be able to receive your stripe on your belt! We will start with the Nova Ninjas and implement with the adult programs soon after.
We are moving in a direction that will eventually have us test for stripes monthly. This will be based upon what we have learned from the previous 3 weeks of that month. At the beginning of each month, there will be a hand-out that has some of the main techniques from the curriculum as well as some character development topics. You may be asked to display none, some, or all of the things on the hand-out. Remember, this is an education, so please be studying!
Free Women’s Self Defense

We are having another Women's Self-Defense class. This is our way of giving back to the community! We have had such a success with them that we are not implementing a curriculum and suggest everyone bring a notebook. Share this and tag your friends in our Facebook posts. There is a Facebook event created! The link is posted above under Upcoming Dates!

Fitness Kickboxing

Want to punch something!? To be a well rounded Martial Artist, it really takes knowing a variety of Martial Arts (Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, and Striking). We are working with a World Champion Kickboxer and 2nd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to develop a curriculum that will enhance the Nova Mente Family! We are implementing this program in phases starting with fitness kickboxing over the next six months and then will be adding on technical kickboxing/sparring a little later.
We are looking at having the first classes start in November 2017! Get ready!

Cleaning the Gym

Coming up in Martial Arts, it was always the students’ responsibility to clean the gym. We used to work together at the end of class and mop the mats, take out the trash, vacuum, and tidy up. It builds character, discipline, shows respect of your Academy, and demonstrates humbleness. No person is better than another. We all work together as one team.
You be sure and all thank Jami as she is putting together a cleaning list that we will hang up for things to be checked off at the end of the night. Everyone pitch in and help out!
And, I understand some of you are on time constraints. Maybe, this means, all you can do is wipe off the sink or mirror in the bathroom. Every little bit helps. We put tons of energy and money into building an exceptionally nice facility. Please help us maintain it!

Hygiene on the Mats

This is very important not just for you, but for your training partners as well. It is important that we take our GIs home, and wash them after every class. Smelly GIs and training gear is unpleasant to be around and is usually a good indicator that bacteria is beginning to grow! This could pose a health risk to you as well as the rest of the Nova family. Ringworm, Staph, and other bacterial skin conditions are common in Jiu Jitsu if we do not clean ourselves and our gear! Let’s all do our part to ensure those bad conditions stay out of Nova!
Consistency in Your Training

"Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come."
-Dwayne Johnson

It is important that you do your best to be here, and train often. You all are paying to learn Jiu Jitsu from us, and we are committed that you get what you pay for. In order for that to take place, you need to take action to make sure you are getting to class at least a couple times a week.

I promise you that if you are consistent in your training, you will begin to experience the benefits of Jiu Jitsu and everything it has to offer on a much deeper level. You will begin to lose weight, tone up, and have more peace of mind. All of these things come from consistent training so do your best to get here and train.
I know Jiu Jitsu is not the easiest to take on…especially at the beginning. We are committed that you leave here each day empowered! On the days you don’t “feel” like coming, please come! This is where you will experience your biggest breakthroughs!

Nova Past News

Antonie Evans Seminar

July 29th 2017 - Head Coach Dylan, Coach Kyle, Chris, Teo, and Rich attended a seminar at Professor Robert Wunderlich’s academy in Arvada that was taught by Antonie Evans. We received a ton of knowledge, drills, and useful Jiu Jitsu techniques the will get passed on to you as we continue to grow as a Jiu Jitsu family together.
Coach Kyle also received his Purple Belt during this seminar, and as most of you have already seen from the video, he was on the receiving end of a 30 minute shark tank that followed the competition seminar.

If you have not seen the craziness, here is the link to the video and please subscribe as well.
Women’s & LGBT Self Defense Seminar
July 30th - We had our second Women’s Self Defense Seminar, and it was a big success in the community. We had 16 women or members of the LGBT community come out to attend, and learn empowering self-defense. The next one is September 17th!

Nova Mente Leadership Team

August 7th - We had our first leadership team meeting. The leadership team is designed for those students that would like to take on a more active/leadership role here at the academy.  We will be looking to members of our leadership team to lead by example, and assist around the academy in addition to learning how to effectively teach Nova Mente Jiu Jitsu. If you have interest in being a part of the leadership team, please see one of your coaches.

Extreme Martial Arts Seminar for Rocky in Amarillo, Tx
On August 11th, Coach Dylan, Kyle, and Alec drove down to Amarillo, Tx to teach a seminar for a sick little boy named Rocky. He had some severe health issues during his birth. So, we teamed up and Coach Dylan taught a Jiu Jitsu seminar with two other Black Belts, Professors Ty Garrett and Garrett Poole. It was an awesome event. We raised $3800 in house and another approximately $4000 online with a GoFundMe! I’m attaching the link if you still want to donate. Thank you to everyone who did!

Fight To Win Pro Event 45
August 18th - Fight2Win Pro is a professional Jiu Jitsu promotion that travels from city to city, and matches up the best guys in the area at Purple, Brown, and Black Belt against one another. Both Coach Kyle, and Head Coach Dylan were asked to compete professionally on the August 18th card here in Denver. The event was held at the National Western Complex downtown. Thank you for everyone who came out and supported us, our sponsors, team, family and friends! We love you all!

2017 Colorado Open Tournament
August 19th - I am excited to announce we brought home our very first medals for Team Nova Mente! It really takes something to go out and compete! So, thank you to everyone who competed and supported the team. We had 8 competitors: Alex, Nate, Rich, Jake, Jared, Teo, Maximus, and Coach D! I am so proud! I know we all learned a lot have lots to work on before the next tournament at the end of September.

6 Steps to A Life Worth Living

6 Steps to A Life Worth Living

1. There is nothing to resist.

  • What are your commitments? Are you suffering at all right now? If so, look at what you are resisting.

  • Does it go against what you are committed to? Are you committed to being at peace? Happy? Fulfilled? Loving? Powerful?

  • Everything you resist will bring suffering! Acceptance is the basis of love.

2. This is it and it's perfect. It really is.

  • Life is going the way it is going. If it was supposed to go a different way, it would have. You are right where you are supposed to be. If you were supposed to be somewhere else...well, you would be.

3. You get to chose your life

  • What do you want? Who do you want to be? What difference do you want to make? You have the power to create anything for yourself and your life at anytime. It all starts with communication!

Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is life itself, it is an insane way to live.
— Eckhart Tolle
life circle
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
— Mahatma Gandhi
Always say ‘yes’ to the present moment... Surrender to what is. Say ‘yes’ to life - and see how life starts suddenly to start working for you rather than against you.
— Eckhart Tolle

4. Instead of planning the future, why not sit back and watch what the future is creating for you right now?

  • Who you are being right now?

  • Your way of being now in the moment gives your future. Are you being in this moment a person acting on their commitments or some other way?

  • Just be who you are committed to being right now. To be in the future right now...not someday down the that person now and watch what shows up. It will show up!

5. It is all for naught if it is all about you!

  • Give your life to/for something bigger than yourself. Make a difference for others and see how nice it is to take the attention off of yourself. Stand for something great. Stand for something profound.

6. Finally, actions produce outcomes.

  • Take enough consistent actions around your commitments, have other people see what you see, share yourself, share your ideas, make the difference, create a team around you and watch the transformation take place. Take actions!
