For New Students

At Nova Mente, we believe in the power of transformation through Jiu Jitsu. Our goal is to transform you so you can, in turn, transform others. That is the ideology behind our leadership program.

The leadership program is designed to assist our new WhiteBelt students as they begin there own journeys into Jiu Jitsu. Being a beginner WhiteBelt is one of the most trying times in Jiu Jitsu. It can feel frustrating at times, and feel as though you are not retaining what you are learning. That's where our leadership team members come in. The leadership team is comprised of more experienced practitioners (think 14-20 months of training) who have shown and interested in assisting  newer members of our team. In essence, you can think of this program like a buddy system. When you become a Nova Mente team member, you will have a member of the leadership team assigned to you to make sure you continue to grow in your training, meet the goals you've set for yourself, and have a direct outlet available for questions, and frustrations that may arise.

The members of the Nova Mente Leadership Program are chosen carefully, and are upstanding members of the community both on and off the mats.

For Current Students

If you're a current student, and are considering stepping up to become a member of the leadership program here is what you can expect.

  • Your own Jiu Jitsu game will leap to a completely new level. A famous quote from Albert Einstein exclaims "If you can't explain it to a 6 year old, then you don't understand it." This quote is quote powerful when you begin to apply it to your own life, and is especially true in the context of Jiu Jitsu. When you begin sharing your own Jiu Jitsu knowledge with lower belts, and try to teach them you will realize how frustrating that can be. As a result, you will have to look inward, and re-evaulate what you thought you knew about Jiu Jitsu. Ultimately, what you will be left with is a newer, and deeper context and understanding of the gentle art.
  • You will see the difference you make for others firsthand. This is and indescribable feeling, and one that leads people to want to instruct Jiu Jitsu for themselves at some point. In the Leadership Program you will get a taste of this firsthand as you begin to work with beginners, and see your teaching playing out in training through application. As a result of this sequence, you will begin to gain and better understanding of the power of language, and how you occur for your students ultimately making you a more well balanced martial artist.
